What is the point of the retreat in Bannerlord? ›

By speaking to the Hermit, the player character may be convinced to retire from the campaign and end the game. This allows you to view statistics about your campaign.

Once you have reached your limit of 2 retreats in one hour, you (and your team) will be affected for one hour, prohibiting you and your team from retreating from the battlefield.

Breaking your oath will result in a large drop of honor and relation, as well as making enemies with all of your previous faction. They can be restored if you want to be friends with them again by allying with another faction, however your honor will stay the same.

For a high chance of surrender, bandits will offer to join you while caravans and villagers will offer to pay you for safe passage. For a very high chance of surrender, bandits, caravans and villagers will surrender and you can choose to take them prisoner.

You can donate them to other lords for influence and you can store lords in yours to hold them for ransom, as for regular troops in your own dungeons just sell them all at the tavern.

Being a mercenary is a good way to lead-up to becoming a vassal as it allows you to build relations with lords and get renown by participating in faction battles. It also allows you to burn villages and raid caravans, but have your negative relations removed in the peace deal as opposed to being viewed as a bandit.
